Common Cockroaches Found in Maryland
American Cockroach
The American cockroach prefers balmy, humid climates. However, Maryland's cold winters drive these roaches indoors where they can find warmth, food and moisture. The American cockroach has also been known to carry bacteria and even worms. You can tell that you have American cockroaches in your home by their dark egg capsules and small, blunt droppings left in dark areas.
German Cockroach
German cockroaches are excellent scavengers and will eat just about anything. These pests can also reproduce at an alarming rate. They prefer living in warm, humid areas, such as a kitchen or bathroom. German cockroaches will scour at night for crumbs and kitchen scraps, but can even eat soap and glue. To keep these roaches out, minimize your use of cardboard, as they can enter the home stowing away in boxes and paper grocery bags.
Oriental Cockroach
The Oriental cockroach can survive outdoors even in cold regions. They can be found in woodpiles or under mulch, especially in late summer. They're also drawn to kitchens, basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces and laundry rooms, as well as sewers, garbage cans and dumpsters.
